Clearing the Fog about Autism is a personal journey for me. At age 2 ½ my daughter was diagnosed with Autism. Even before I began the process of having her evaluated, I quickly realized that I was on my own. After the diagnosis things got worse. Nobody asked questions. Nor did they have answers to mine. It was the worse feeling I have ever felt in my entire life. It seems that every phone call and every doctor’s visit turned into a dead end or concrete wall.
At that time, I had been a researcher for about thirteen years. Thankfully it was in my blood to go learn as much as I could about Autism. I was very appalled to learn how little some doctors knew about treatment options for children on the spectrum. Furthermore how little concern they seemed to have about whether or not such options even exist. I knew that I had to be my own child’s advocate. In doing so, she has and continues to make progress every day. Click here to follow her progress.
Even though the task of researching treatments for Autism can be daunting, when families and caregivers begin looking into the various treatment options available for autism disorders, they will be surprised to find that there are many options available. My daughter is fortunate enough that she had someone to stand up and fight for her. When I think about the progress she has made, I can’t help but to think about those children who do not have what she does, A CHANCE. I want to help the children’s families who are unaware, misinformed and who need answers to ways to help their children with Autism. Furthermore, I want to provide families with the financial support they will surely need to receive treatment options as they are very expensive and are not covered by medical insurance. Providing various treatments for my daughter nearly bankrupted my household.
Unfortunately, what works for some families, may not work for others. Since individuals with autism spectrum disorders are not exactly the same, treatment plans need to be made specific for each individual. We provide local and national support group referrals and funding for treatment. Each day families who have nowhere else to turn will come to CFAA seeking assistance. What they find is the support system they need in order to make positive changes to become healthy and productive members of the community.
My goal is to get children diagnosed early and begin the early intervention process. Early intervention could make the difference in a child’s development. Clearing the Fog is here to respond to the most urgent needs of the community, providing real help and hope so that all affected can reach their full potential.
